Le Hang “Leah” Whalen is a VietnameseAmerican visual development artist and biology enthusiast from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her passion lies in creating thoughtful, well-researched designs and telling stories with heart. She is interested in all parts of the animation pipeline and loves learning new ways to bridge the gap between concept art and 3d. As an older sister to a disabled sibling, directing “Stone Lions Don’t Roar” was a labor of love which she hopes the audience can feel in every minute. Raised on her mother’s stories growing up as a refugee, she was inspired to tell a story that is culturally specific, but universally resonant with any viewer able to recognize themselves in the characters. When not drawing or dreaming up new film ideas, you can find Leah oilpainting, bird-watching, or trying to replicate her mother’s cooking.

Avery Stratton

Producer, Lighting & Compositing Co-Lead

Avery is a lighting and compositing artist from Asheville, North Carolina. She was always interested in the visual arts, doodling on the back of tests when lectures were boring and attempting the most ambitious projects she could in art class. From a young age, she learned the importance of color and lighting from her father, an interior designer always adjusting the lights to be perfect for every occasion, who taught her that lighting is what makes a scene feel just right and brings everything together. Originally coming to SCAD for 2D animation, Avery ended up finding her passion for 3D lighting and compositing early on and made it her main focus for every project she made, leading her to Stone Lions Don't Roar, a film with a colorful world where the lighting helps drive the emotional narrative and breathes life into every scene. She also developed an interest in the producing side of things while contributing on several student films, and worked alongside director Le Hang from the very beginning to bring Stone Lions from pitch to production. Outside of her work, Avery can be found spreadsheeting her entire life, making fanart, and curling up in bed with her cat.

Rebecca Otto is a 3D animator with a passion for film and animal conservation from Dayton, OH. Growing up in a very military centered town, she didn’t always expect to lean into animation as a future career path, but after seeing how her busy family could always come together every time a fun TV show or movie came on, she knew she wanted to be able to give that gift to others. Rebecca wasn’t exactly sure what specifically she wanted to do in the animation industry when she got to SCAD, she explored a multitude of different options and early classes before landing on 3D animation. With her path chosen she was given the opportunity to work alongside the incredible team behind Stone Lions Don’t Roar, where she was constantly inspired by the passion and drive of her teammates, and ultimately got the chance to help co-produce the film. Rebecca found a love for the organization, collaboration, and problem solving that came with producing and hopes to continue producing in the future. When not animating, Rebecca can be found going to theme parks and her local zoo with friends.

Being brought onto Stone Lions as the team's modeling artist was a big challenge to take on. She worked in very close communication with the concept artists to create their visions in 3D. Throughout the film, Cassandra’s passion was driven by understanding what others see and idealizing it through digital sculpting. And if she isn’t working, she’s probably eating Dominos.

Ryan Hong is a 3D animator from Springfield, Pennsylvania. Despite animation not being a popular choice in his hometown, he first began learning it in high school in a photography class. Having become enamored with the medium, he chose to study animation at a higher level at SCAD where he was recruited to work on SLDR as a 3D animator. For Ryan, working on animation for SLDR has been exceptionally stimulating. Whether it be animating dramatic bridge shots, heart-pumping soldier fights, or grand entrances, it’s been the greatest stage for Ryan to put his skills to the test and play around with the medium. Beyond animation, Ryan’s eagerness led him to explore other aspects of the pipeline. Under the guidance of his CFX lead, Ryan learned the cloth sim workflow, becoming a CFX artist during the post-production part of the film. Outside of animation, whenever downtime finds him, Ryan avidly enjoys running, trying any and all foods, or spending time with friends.

Nancy Zheng is a visual development artist from Shanghai. She loves to emphasize color within her storytelling and worldbuilding, often depicting natural landscapes in her work. Her journey through art school has led to an opportunity to work on the short film Stone Lions Don't Roar, in which she had a crucial role helping shape the visual direction by exploring the film's colorkeys, character design, asset design, environment design, and matte painting. When she isn't drawing, she can be found outside enjoying beaches and oceans, playing games, watching shows, or hanging out with friends.
